The transition into early adolescence is one of the most significant developmental shifts in a young person’s life. For girls aged 11 to 13, this period often brings a wave of new emotional and social pressures that can be difficult to navigate alone. From the halls of middle school to the digital world of social media, preteen girls are frequently confronted with body-image concerns, peer comparison, and rising expectations both at home and in the classroom.
At Resilient Mind Psychotherapy in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn we recognize that these years are foundational for a girl’s long-term mental well-being. Our Empowerment & Self-Esteem Group is specifically designed to provide a supportive, judgment-free environment where girls can explore their identities, build lasting confidence, and strengthen their social-emotional skills.

During the ages of 11 to 13, many girls begin to experience a dip in self-confidence as they become more aware of social hierarchies and academic stress. Challenges like bullying or peer pressure can impact emotional regulation and self-worth, sometimes leading to withdrawal or heightened anxiety.
Our Brooklyn-based group therapy for preteen girls addresses these challenges head-on. By gathering with peers who are facing similar experiences, girls learn that they are not alone. This shared connection helps reduce the power of peer comparison and replaces it with a sense of community and mutual empowerment.
This group is more than just a weekly meeting; it is a structured journey toward self-discovery. We use a variety of guided discussions, creative exercises, and collaborative activities to help participants express themselves authentically. Our goal is to help every girl build a foundation of mental well-being that will support her through her teenage years and beyond.
Each 60-minute session at our Bay Ridge office is designed to be engaging and interactive, ensuring that girls feel safe to open up while having fun with their peers.
Feelings Check-In: We begin each meeting with a check-in to help girls develop greater emotional awareness and learn to name their internal experiences.
The Sharing Circle: This is a dedicated space where participants can talk openly about their week, school pressures, or social challenges without the fear of judgment.
Lessons in Self-Worth: We provide active reflections on confidence and positive self-talk, teaching girls how to combat their “inner critic” with self-compassion.
Social & Interpersonal Games: Through communication games, girls practice the skills necessary for healthy peer interactions, such as setting boundaries and active listening.
Creative Collaborative Projects: We incorporate engaging activities that foster connection, empathy, and resilience, allowing girls to see their strengths in action.
By participating in this empowerment group, preteen girls develop a toolkit of coping strategies that they can use in their daily lives. The benefits often extend far beyond our office walls:
Improved Communication: Girls learn to express their needs and feelings more clearly at home and in school.
Resilience Against Peer Pressure: Strengthening self-esteem helps girls stay grounded in their own values when faced with difficult social choices.
Emotional Regulation: We help girls understand how to manage the “big feelings” that often come with early adolescence.
Increased Self-Confidence: By identifying their unique identities and strengths, girls feel more capable and empowered to take on new challenges.
We believe that high-quality, professional support for your daughter should be both accessible and straightforward.

How do I know if my daughter is ready for a group setting?
If your daughter is struggling with confidence, navigating new social pressures at school, or seems more withdrawn than usual, she may benefit from the peer support of this group. During our initial intake, we will help determine if this environment is the best developmental fit for her.
What if my daughter is shy and doesn’t want to speak in the circle?
It is completely normal for preteen girls to feel hesitant at first. Our facilitator, Fabia DeMartino, is skilled at creating a low-pressure environment where girls can participate at their own comfort level. Often, seeing other girls share their experiences helps “break the ice” naturally.
Does this group address issues like bullying or social media?
Yes. Social media and peer comparison are significant factors in the lives of 11–13 year olds. We provide a safe space to discuss these pressures and teach girls how to build resilience against negative online or schoolyard interactions.
