Psychotherapist in Brooklyn, NY

Alexander Sergeev, MHC-LP
As a first-generation American born to parents and grandparents from the former Soviet Union, I understand firsthand how cultural stigma and intergenerational trauma can make mental health struggles feel isolating. From an early age, I experienced anxiety and depression, often feeling overwhelmed just trying to get through the day. I learned to mask my internal world, making excuses to avoid situations where I didn’t feel safe, welcomed, or understood.
As a therapist, I work with individuals who come to therapy feeling anxious, depressed, burned out, or stuck in their careers, relationships, or within habits and patterns that no longer serve them. Many share a deep sense of disconnection from themselves, a feeling of voicelessness, and uncertainty about what they truly want or need. Whether shaped by trauma or other difficult experiences, they’ve developed coping mechanisms that once provided safety, but now feel limiting, keeping them tethered to the past or caught in worry about the future.
In therapy, I strive to create a warm, objective, nonjudgmental, and healing space where you can feel truly seen and heard—perhaps for the first time. Our sessions offer a space to build self-awareness, heal past wounds, and take meaningful steps toward personal and professional growth. Clients often report feeling more balanced, resilient, and in control of their lives as we work together. They gain insight into their past, develop tools to manage the present, and build confidence in creating a more aligned future.
My approach is eclectic and holistic. I integrate strengths-based, Cognitive Behavioral (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment (ACT), Rational Emotive Behavioral (REBT), psychodynamic, and goal-oriented modalities to tailor our work to your unique needs. I don’t see you as a diagnosis—I see you as a human being doing your best to navigate life’s complexities. You deserve empathy, grace, compassion, and the opportunity to heal. It takes a lot of courage to take the first step. If any of this resonates with you, I invite you to take the second step with me. Whether you are seeking clarity, healing, or personal development, I’m passionate about the work we’ll do together, and I look forward to the privilege of being part of your healing journey.
Outside of the therapy room, I’m passionate about staying physically active, spending time in nature, playing guitar, appreciating music and art, cooking, reading, and enjoying time with my family, friends, and my dog.
